Is it safe to bike in rough water?

Unlike a kayak or stand up paddleboard, the catamaran configuration of the  S1-C provides for maximum stability even on rough, choppy waters.  And, as small watercraft, we recommend following any marine advisories or warning and always carry a life jacket

Can I take it on the open ocean?

Accepted Answer

Yes! The bikes have been tested over thousands of ocean rides and long distance ocean crossing.

What does it feel like to ride a Schiller water bike?

Accepted Answer

Unlike pedal boats or other forms of pedal powered water craft, the S1-C delivers a true cycling experience  on the water. We use premium components including the Gates Carbon Drive system to deliver a smooth cadence.

How does the bike steer?

Accepted Answer

Steering is the same as any bike. Turn the handlebars left  or right for the desired direction while pedaling forward or reverse.

Can the bike be used for surfing?

Accepted Answer

No. The high center of gravity is not amenable for surfing with the bike.

What kind of RPM can I cycle at?

Depending on your cycling experience and conditions  on the water, average RPM ranges from 40-60

How fast can I bike?

Accepted Answer

Average cruising speed is about 5-6 mph (8-10 kph). Top speed (max hull speed)  is 11.5 mph (18.5 kph).

Is it hard to get back when the wind picks up?

Accepted Answer

It depends on wind direction and speed. Most of our customers report that it is much easier to bike back to shore than it is to paddle.

What is the maximum weight for riding?

Accepted Answer

The maximum rideable weight is 450 pounds (204 kg) inclusive of the rider and any passengers, pets, or gear/equipment on the front deck.

What size is right for me: Medium or Large?

Accepted Answer

Generally speaking, the Medium frame size is suited for riders  5’7" (1.74 meters) and under. Riders taller than that can still ride the Medium frame but will be more comfortable and have better leg extension riding one a Large frame. Riders 5’9" and taller should select the Large frame size unless the bike is being shared with others who are shorter.  Shorter riders (under 5’7) generally cannot ride the Large frame.

What kind of accessories can I add to my bike?

Accepted Answer

Any accessories that can be securely affixed to bike handlebars will work on the S1-C (e.g.iphone holder, handlebar bag, basket, lights etc). In addition, you can  secure a wide variety of  accessories and/equipment on the pontoons and/or front deck accessory (e.g. portable, waterproof speaker, LED lights, fitness equipment, cooler). <Link to accessories page in the store>

Can I change out the saddle or handlebars?

Yes. The S1-C uses standard bike fittings allowing for a  multitude of options to change out saddle and handlebars

Can I use my clip-in pedals?

Accepted Answer

No. Our custom pedals are specifically designed for salt water environments and come with a neoprene strap to comfortably secure the riders feet both in shoes and barefoot.

What is the minimum water depth necessary to bike?

Accepted Answer

Approximately 20  in / 50  cm.

In shallow water mode, the bike can be operated in 12  in or 30 cm depth at low speed. Accelerating to normal speed will cause the propeller to drop down to its  maximum depth.

Can I ride my bike up onto shore?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The bike is designed for beach landings. We  recommend lifting the Outdrive unit  (rudder + propeller) once you have dismounted. Never push the bike out backwards  (tips pointing to shore) with the Outdrive unit down.  Always turn the bike around with  tips pointing towards the  water before manually lowering the Outdrive  unit.
